JAKARTA – Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung Wibowo has warned of the impacts of the “Godzilla” El Niño phenomenon, which has the potential to trigger health problems and food availability issues in the capital.

According to Pramono, there are two main issues to be wary of from this phenomenon: food disruptions and an increase in disease cases, particularly acute respiratory tract infections (ISPA).

“For El Niño, the main issues will be two. The first concerns food availability. The second is health problems, especially those related to ISPA,” said Pramono at City Hall on Thursday (16/4/2026), quoted from Antara.

“Anticipation to face El Niño for the DKI Jakarta Government, we will take preventive actions. That is better than dealing with incidents in the field,” he added.

Head of the DKI Jakarta Health Department Ani Ruspitawati explained that the “Godzilla” El Niño could trigger extreme temperature rises, drought, and a simultaneous decline in air quality.

This condition, according to her, risks worsening public health.

“High temperatures not only increase the risk of heatstroke and dehydration, but also aggravate chronic diseases like heart and lung conditions,” said Ani.

At the same time, declining air quality, including an increase in fine particulates, can drive a surge in ISPA cases, especially among vulnerable groups such as children and the elderly.

“Use personal protective equipment like hats or umbrellas when outdoors. In addition, use sunscreen and follow weather monitoring information from the BMKG,” said Ani.
