Pramono Vows Strict Action Against Illegal Waste Disposal in Jakarta
Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung Wibowo has stated that the administration will take firm action against residents who continue to dispose of waste indiscriminately, especially in rivers or waterways. “If residents are found dumping rubbish in rivers, the Jakarta Provincial Government will not hesitate to take a firm stance,” Pramono said at City Hall on Wednesday.
He explained that the strict measures are based on Gubernatorial Instruction Number 5 of 2026, which regulates waste sorting. The instruction categorises waste into four types: biodegradable waste, recyclable waste, household hazardous and toxic waste (B3), and residual waste.
With the issuance of this instruction, residents are expected to better understand the waste sorting movement and apply it in their daily lives. “As we approach five centuries of Jakarta, we must not bequeath the problem of waste to the next generation,” Pramono stated.
He added that the waste sorting movement must be continuously promoted as a collective effort starting from homes, neighbourhoods, and everyday spaces. A clean, healthy, and sustainable Jakarta, he assessed, can only be achieved through collaboration between the government and the community. “The Jakarta Provincial Government is committed to working responsively and adaptively so that residents can carry out their activities while ensuring the city continues to move towards its future,” Pramono concluded.
