Pramono Urges Public Not to Link Menteng Clash to Ethnicity
Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung has asked that the clash between residents that occurred on Jalan Matraman Dalam, East Jakarta, and Jalan Tambak, Menteng, not be linked to any particular ethnicity. He said Jakarta is open to everyone.
“I truly do not want any issues related to ethnicity in Jakarta, because Jakarta is already safe, comfortable and peaceful,” Pramono told reporters when met at Jakarta City Hall on Tuesday, 28 July 2026.
Pramono said diversity is accepted in Jakarta, which is why the city has so far remained well maintained. “The fact that there was an incident like the one in Matraman is simply a reality that exists,” he said.
He also urged the public to exercise restraint and resolve every problem with a cool head in order to achieve a safe and comfortable Jakarta. “Hopefully Jakarta will remain safe, comfortable, and open to everyone,” he said.
The clash between residents, which killed one person and injured another in the Menteng area of Central Jakarta, has ended peacefully. Both parties were brought together and mediated at the Metropolitan Regional Police Headquarters (Polda Metro Jaya) on Monday, 27 July 2026.
The incident began when a motorcyclist was reprimanded after revving his engine near Jalan Matraman Dalam. Local residents disturbed by the noise of the motorcycle exhaust became the trigger for the commotion, after residents shouted at the rider.
The rider then returned to the scene with several others, unwilling to accept the way he had been treated. Upon arrival, the person who had reprimanded him was no longer there. However, the rider became emotional and vandalised a food vendor’s cart.
Local residents who saw this approached him, and an unavoidable brawl broke out. From this incident, one person with the initials K was reported to have died, while another with the initials DS was injured and is being treated at Dr. Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital.
In connection with the case, investigators from the Mobile Sub-Directorate of the General Crimes Investigation Directorate of Polda Metro Jaya have questioned eight witnesses and named four people as suspects for vandalism. They bear the initials GNA, AJL, FAM and ELL.
Meanwhile, the alleged assault case is being handled by investigators from the Central Jakarta Metropolitan Police, while the detention of the suspects has been placed at the General Crimes Directorate of Polda Metro Jaya.
Head of the Criminal Investigation Unit of the Central Jakarta Metropolitan Police, Assistant Superintendent Roby Heri Saputra, said investigators are continuing to dig into the sequence of events and each party’s involvement. So far, investigators have questioned eight witnesses and named three people with the initials SK, AS and OR as suspects.
