JAKARTA - Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung will take firm action against free private schools that continue to charge fees from students.

Pramono stated that schools already included in the free private school programme must no longer burden pupils or parents with additional costs.

“If they have been made free but still charge for facilities to students and pupils, the DKI Jakarta government will take decisive action on that,” Pramono said when met at the DKI Jakarta Youth and Sports Office Building, Friday (8/5/2026).

These schools cover levels from primary school (SD), junior secondary (SMP), senior secondary (SMA) to vocational secondary (SMK).

The DKI Jakarta Provincial Government has also allocated a budget of Rp253 billion to implement the free private school programme.

The programme is intended to make access to education more equitable, especially for residents from low-income families.

Previously, the DKI Jakarta DPRD had requested an increase in the number of private schools included in the free programme.

“Because providing free school facilities cannot be done by the DKI Jakarta government alone. So it must be done together with the DPRD,” Pramono said.

Regarding the addition of schools, Pramono will discuss it with the DKI Jakarta DPRD for next year.

“How many will be added will certainly be a joint decision,” Pramono revealed.
