Pramono to Take Firm Action Against Free Private Schools Charging Fees
Governor of DKI Jakarta, Pramono Anung, has assured that he will take firm action against the management of private schools that have joined the free school programme if they are found to still be collecting fees from their students.
“And if, after being made free, they still charge for facilities to students and pupils, the DKI Jakarta government will take a firm decision on that,” Pramono said at the DKI Jakarta Youth and Sports Office Building in East Jakarta on Friday (8/5).
Pramono stated that he will soon summon council members to hold an official meeting to comprehensively resolve this controversy over illegal levies.
He emphasised that the handling and supervision of the free school programme is a shared responsibility that cannot be decided unilaterally by the DKI Provincial Government (Pemprov) apparatus.
“First, for the free schools, the competent commission in the DPRD will soon be received by me officially. Because providing free school facilities cannot be done alone by the DKI Jakarta government. So it must be done together with the DPRD,” Pramono said.
Furthermore, the meeting will not only focus on evaluating violations.
Pramono mentioned that the discussion will also be directed towards examining projections for adding quotas to free private schools in the next budget period.
“And for next year, how many will be added will of course also be a joint decision,” he said.
Previously, the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government through the Education Office prepared a budget of more than Rp200 billion for the free private school programme for the 2026/2027 academic year.
This year, the Provincial Government added 63 private schools to the programme, bringing the total to 103 free private schools.
“The budget allocated for 103 private schools amounts to Rp253,625,139,600,” said the Head of the DKI Jakarta Education Office, Nahdiana, on Friday (17/4).
From these 103 schools, the projected number of students is 23,694 pupils.
