Pramono to Regulate High Fencing in Malls and Office Buildings
Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung intends to regulate the installation of high fences in several shopping malls, as they create an impression that the area is unsafe. “I have been closely observing the installation of fences in several places that have become extremely high. Personally, as the Governor of Jakarta, I certainly desire for Jakarta to be safe and comfortable,” Pramono stated at the Hotel Borobudur, Central Jakarta, on Saturday (1/8).
He requested that business actors, mall managers, and property or office owners refrain from installing excessive fencing, as such conditions can foster a negative perception of Jakarta. “This includes mall owners, property, and office owners; there is no need to install excessive fences, and I will coordinate to regulate this,” he said.
Pramono does not want the presence of excessive high fences, including in malls, to form an image that Jakarta is in an unsafe condition. According to him, based on coordination with security and law enforcement agencies, the current situation in Jakarta is conducive. “We must not let this create an image that Jakarta is not doing well. In my view as Governor, and through coordination with security and law enforcement agencies across various sectors, I am confident that Jakarta is perfectly safe,” he emphasised.
When asked whether the Jakarta Provincial Government would prohibit the construction of high fences, Pramono noted that there are currently no specific regulations governing this. “Regarding a prohibition, frankly, there is nothing specific, but creating excessive fences disturbs comfort and disrupts the current state of Jakarta, which I believe should be better,” he said.
Pramono revealed his vision for Jakarta to become a more open and green city. He expressed hope that fences would no longer be a dominant element in the urban landscape. “In fact, I am thinking that fences do not need to be so high. What is more important is having more trees and more greenery. It might also be better if adjacent areas are more open to one another,” he added.
