Pramono to inspect waste processing facilities in Ciangir next week
Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung Wibowo will inspect a waste processing facility in Cianglar, Tangerang, next week to observe the processing of sorted waste, including organic waste intended for composting. Pramono stated that the Ciangir facility has the potential to serve as an alternative solution for waste management in Jakarta.
Speaking at Jakarta City Hall on Friday, Pramono noted that the Jakarta Provincial Government is actively seeking methods to reduce the amount of waste sent to the Bantar Gebang Integrated Waste Treatment Site (TPST). Consequently, the government is encouraging waste processing at the source, ranging from households and markets to commercial establishments.
In addition to the Ciangir facility, the Jakarta Provincial Government is preparing collaborations for ‘waste-to-fuel’ initiatives. This programme is designed to support waste management at both Bantar Gebang and the Rorotan Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF) plant. The provincial government is currently limiting the volume of incoming waste to prevent the recurrence of odours previously complained about by residents.
“Because we are handling it better now, I am currently restricting the volume to no more than 1,000 [tonnes] to ensure there is no odour,” Pramono explained. He added that resident complaints regarding the Rorotan RDF plant have significantly decreased, to the point of being almost non-existent.
To further decrease the burden on Bantar Gebang, the Jakarta Provincial Government is opening opportunities for various parties to manage waste directly at the source, such as in markets, households, and the hotel, restaurant, and cafe (horeca) sectors. “Therefore, I am now granting permission and approval to anyone who wishes to manage waste—not just at the disposal site, but at the source, whether in markets, households, or the horeca sector—as long as it reduces the waste sent to Bantar Gebang,” Pramono concluded. He emphasised that the more waste is processed at the initial stage, the less waste will need to be transported to Bantar Gebang, thereby reducing Jakarta’s overall waste management burden.
