Pramono to Crack Down on Illegal Dumpsite in Cilincing

Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung Wibowo will carry out internal reforms regarding an illegal temporary disposal site (TPS) in the Nagrak area of Cilincing, North Jakarta. “With all due respect, I also have to do internal reforms. So it must be fair, just,” Pramono said at Jakarta City Hall on Wednesday (12/8). He also demanded firm action against the perpetrators of the illegal dumping and requested that the identities of the parties involved be published to create a deterrent effect and ensure such practices cease. “I have asked the City Hall ranks, including the Environmental Agency, the Communications and Informatics Agency, and others, firstly to announce it, secondly to fine them. Thirdly, the companies that have been profiting from the hotels, restaurants, and cafés, if they cannot fix this, shut them down. We are taking these firm steps to handle this,” Pramono explained. Based on reports received by the Jakarta Provincial Government, the waste piled up at the location is suspected not to originate from households, but rather from commercial sector waste. The land used is also reportedly still under a ownership dispute. Pramono revealed that the majority of the illegally dumped waste comes from the hotel, restaurant, and café sector. The waste is transported by private operators who charge customers a fee, but then dump it carelessly in the Nagrak area. The Nagrak area was previously used by the Jakarta Provincial Government as an alternative waste disposal site in 2003. However, all official disposal activities were halted between 2015 and 2016 and redirected back to the Bantargebang Integrated Waste Processing Site. Despite the closure, illegal dumping and sorting activities continue, with private waste trucks, illegal sorting stalls, and scavengers still found at the location.
