Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung has approved the construction of 11 new apartment blocks (rusun) next year as an effort to meet the housing needs of residents amid limited land availability in the capital. “In the budget meeting, I have approved for next year that we build 11 new large rusun to provide open and transparent ease for anyone to own or rent them,” said Pramono, quoted on Thursday (25/6). He said vertical housing is an unavoidable solution because land prices in Jakarta are increasingly difficult for the public to afford. “It is impossible for people in Jakarta to own land unless they are wealthy. So vertical housing is the keyword,” he said. Besides preparing housing, the Jakarta Provincial Government is also continuing to foster street vendors (PKL) through various training programmes. However, the current economic conditions have caused the number of people coming to Jakarta to look for work to rise again. “I received a report from the Population and Civil Registration Agency (Dukcapil) that many people are now returning to Jakarta because the hub is in Jakarta,” he said. Although open to anyone who wants to work and do business, Pramono stressed that all community activities must maintain public order. “Jakarta is an open city. Anyone may come, anyone may do business here. But the most important thing is not to disturb public order,” he asserted.
