Pramono to Accelerate River Normalisation During Dry Season: Low Water Levels Ease Work

Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung wants to accelerate river normalisation during the dry season. He said the water discharge is currently low, making the work easier.

“We will carry out river normalisation when the water discharge is low. Therefore, for construction at several points already cleared by the Water Resources Agency and the Ministry of Agrarian Affairs and Spatial Planning, we will soon begin normalisation in a number of places,” said Pramono in South Jakarta on Tuesday (21/7/2026).

He said the DKI provincial government would also prepare measures to anticipate drought during a prolonged dry season. He added that the potential increase in pollution during the dry season would also be discussed at a meeting next week.

“As for drought, Jakarta itself has not experienced it so far. But of course we are anticipating it. What if it happens, if the dry spell is long and there are no water resources, then certainly steps must be taken,” said Pramono.

Previously, Pramono had reminded all parties about the increased potential for fires during the dry season. He asked that every neighbourhood unit (RW) be equipped with fire extinguishers. He also urged residents who smoke not to discard cigarette butts carelessly.

“Don’t, for instance, throw cigarette butts away carelessly after smoking, which could cause fires or short circuits. So let us guard against this together. The DKI Jakarta government will repeatedly convey these measures to the public,” he said.
