Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung has targeted the normalisation of the Ciliwung River to be completed next year. The target is tied to the 500th anniversary, or five centuries, of the city of Jakarta, which falls in 2027.

He made the remarks whilst inspecting the progress of land acquisition for the normalisation of one point along the Ciliwung River in the kelurahan of Cawang, Jakarta, on Friday, 10 July 2026. He said land acquisition in the area was proceeding reasonably well.

“And if that can be done, then in 2027, when Jakarta marks its 500th birthday, the normalisation of one of the main axes of the Ciliwung River will be complete,” said Pramono during his direct inspection of the Ciliwung River in the Cawang area on Friday, 10 July 2026.

In this regard, the Jakarta Provincial Government has already secured location determination documents for land acquisition covering four kelurahan in the Ciliwung River area, namely Cawang, Rajawati, Pengadegan and Cililitan.

Pramono is targeting all four to be completed next year. “Hopefully it will be finished, because we have already signed the location determination documents, and this continues a normalisation programme that had long been stalled.”

Meanwhile, of the 14 kelurahan targeted, the remaining 10 are in the process of preparing land acquisition planning documents.

According to Pramono, land acquisition is a strategic step in restoring the function of the Ciliwung River. This would allow the volume of water retained to have a wider catchment area in order to mitigate flooding.

On his second visit to inspect land acquisition at one point along the Ciliwung River in Cawang, Pramono assured that the process would be completed by the end of 2026.

The land acquisition is targeted to cover 170 homes, of which 62 have so far been paid for. That leaves 108 homes still in the payment process.

Furthermore, the Jakarta Provincial Government has allocated a budget of Rp300 billion for 2026. “The budget for this year is Rp300 billion. Yes, all buildings that have been acquired will certainly be cleared, including those 170 buildings,” said Pramono.
