JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - DKI Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung admitted he was surprised by Jakarta’s achievement of being named the second safest city in Southeast Asia in the Global Residence Index report as of 16 January 2026. Pramono assessed that the high level of security in Jakarta is partly due to its residents being accustomed to living in diversity. According to him, various religious activities such as Christmas, Chinese New Year, Nyepi, Ramadan, up to Eid al-Fitr, which are often held in public spaces, further strengthen the sense of safety. “Second safest city in ASEAN, I was actually surprised myself. Perhaps because of the various activities held in public spaces starting from Christmas celebrations, then Chinese New Year, Nyepi, Ramadan, Eid al-Fitr, which alhamdulillah demonstrate the strength of diversity in Jakarta,” Pramono said at Jakarta City Hall on Tuesday (7/4/2026). “That also becomes a showcase or symbol of Jakarta itself. Jakarta, which has always been below Bangkok, Manila, and Kuala Lumpur, now is only behind Singapore. And we must maintain and safeguard it together,” Pramono stated. In the report, Jakarta received a safety score of 0.72 and is positioned below Singapore, which holds the first place with a score of 0.90.
