Jakarta — Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung Wibowo has pledged full support for the government’s policy restricting social media access for children under 16 years old, which will take effect on 28 March 2026.

“I will provide complete support. Because in my view, that ministerial regulation is good,” Pramono said at City Hall on Monday.

The regulation will be implemented by the government through the Ministry of Communication and Digital. However, Pramono acknowledged that the regulation’s implementation may not initially be 100 per cent perfect, as gadgets have already become deeply integrated into the lives of people of all ages, including children.

Despite this recognition, he expressed confidence that the restriction could change the habits of children already addicted to gadgets.

“But with this limitation, I am convinced it will bring benefits, especially for the children themselves. Because right now many children are truly addicted to gadgets,” Pramono said.

The Ministry of Communication and Digital previously issued Ministerial Regulation No. 9 of 2026 on Friday, which regulates access restrictions for children under 16 years old to digital platforms. The regulation stems from Government Regulation No. 17 of 2025 on Electronic System Management in Child Protection, known as PP Tunas.

According to the regulation, children under 16 years old will no longer be permitted to maintain accounts on high-risk digital platforms. Under the new rule, accounts belonging to children under 16 on platforms deemed high-risk—including YouTube, TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, Threads, X, Bigolive, and Roblox—will be deactivated.
