Pramono Supports Pyrolysis Technology for Waste Processing in Bantargebang
Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung supports the development of pyrolysis technology to process waste at the Bantargebang Integrated Waste Treatment Site (TPST) in Bekasi, West Java. This technology is being promoted as one of the efforts to address the issue of waste accumulation at the Bantargebang site.
Pramono stated this during an encounter in the Tebet area, South Jakarta, on Thursday (10/09/2026). He mentioned that he has met with the Army Chief of Staff, General Maruli Simanjuntak, and officials from the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) to discuss the development of waste management at Bantargebang.
For context, pyrolysis is a thermochemical decomposition process of organic material through heating at high temperatures in the absence or with very little oxygen.
“The Jakarta Provincial Government will, of course, do what is necessary. I have personally met with Mr Maruli, the Army Chief of Staff, and officials from the Ministry of ESDM to discuss how to develop waste handling at Bantargebang,” said Pramono.
Pramono noted that the waste accumulation at Bantargebang has currently reached almost 55 million tonnes. According to him, the Jakarta Provincial Government has changed its waste management pattern through Governor’s Instruction (Ingub) Number 5 of 2025.
“Previously, it was just collect and dump. Now, it is sort, collect, and process,” he said.
He stated that the Jakarta Provincial Government is open to the use of various technologies for waste processing. In his view, the waste located in Bantargebang can be utilised to create various products using available technology.
“Including what is in Bantargebang, we are providing opportunities for anyone who wishes to be involved because, with current technology, waste can be turned into many different things,” Pramono added.
Pramono revealed that several parties have expressed interest in utilising the waste in Bantargebang. In fact, within a single day, he received three separate delegations discussing waste utilisation.
“In fact, yesterday alone, I received three delegations that wanted to utilise the waste present in Bantargebang,” he noted.
Consequently, Pramono stated that the Jakarta Provincial Government supports the development of waste processing technology, including the initiatives driven by the Ministry of ESDM and the TNI (Indonesian National Armed Forces).
“Therefore, in principle, the Jakarta Provincial Government provides full support to the TNI and the Ministry of ESDM who wish to develop the waste found in Bantargebang,” he concluded.
