JAKARTA - Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung has voiced his support for Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto’s plan to build decent housing for residents living along the railway tracks in the Senen area of Central Jakarta.

Pramono acknowledged that the presence of residents in public facilities, including along railway tracks and in public cemeteries (TPU), has long been a persistent problem in Jakarta.

“Indeed, this has been an ongoing issue over time, and the Jakarta government has already begun addressing it, including for those living in TPU – apologies for the phrasing,” he said.

Pramono cited the redevelopment efforts in the Kebon Nanas Cemetery area as an example.

Since January 2026, residents previously living in that area have been relocated to simple rental apartments (rusunawa) owned by the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government.

“So, for those in the TPU, we moved them to existing apartments, and we repurpose the TPU for new housing or placements. In this way, first, the TPU becomes tidier. Second, they are willing to be relocated to the existing apartments. We provide six months free of charge, but after that, we ask them to pay rent fully,” Pramono explained.

Pramono reiterated that the DKI Provincial Government will continue coordinating with the central government to resolve settlement issues in inappropriate locations.

“Returning to the initial question, the DKI Jakarta Government will fully cooperate with the central government on this handling,” he stated.

Previously, Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya revealed that President Prabowo’s visit to the residents’ settlement along the Senen railway tracks on Thursday (26/3/2026) was conducted on short notice.

During the visit, the President expressed his desire to build decent housing for the residents still living along the railway tracks.

“The President wants to build proper houses for the residents still living along the railway tracks, 3 km from central Jakarta,” he said.

The moment of Prabowo’s arrival at the railway tracks was also posted on his Instagram account @prabowo.
