Pramono Still Studying Tram Concept in Old Town, Focuses on Completing MRT
Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung stated that the plan to build a tram in the Old Town area is still in the study phase. He mentioned that the DKI Provincial Government is focused on completing the MRT project.
“For the Old Town tram, what was conveyed by Mr Deputy Governor certainly needs to be studied more deeply,” said Pramono at the Road Infrastructure Office in East Jakarta on Tuesday (14/4/2026).
Pramono targets the MRT to be completed in early 2029. He also plans to develop TransJakarta bus routes from Old Town to outside Jakarta.
“What we are currently working to complete is the MRT up to Old Town; hopefully, it will be finished in early 2029. Once that is done, the KRL will run, the MRT will run, TransJabodetabek or TransJakarta will run to Old Town, and I am confident Old Town will become a new place that the community will visit,” he explained.
Pramono believes that transportation is key to revitalising the Old Town area. He stated that the area is focused on tourism.
“In particular, we are preparing Old Town to attract tourism,” he said.
Previously, Jakarta Deputy Governor Rano Karno revealed plans to build a tram in the Old Town area as part of a major revitalisation currently being prepared by the DKI Provincial Government. The tram is said to become an icon as well as an environmentally friendly transport solution in that heritage area.
Rano conveyed the plan during the Intimate Dialogue Old Town Update event at Jakarta City Hall on Thursday (9/4). He said the tram concept has entered discussions in the revitalisation team, especially to support Old Town as a low-emission area.
“Indeed, one of the aims is to reduce emissions. We are discussing plans to build a tram within Old Town,” said Rano.
