Pramono Speaks Out on Manggarai Brawl That Paralysed KRL Services
Pramono Prepares Long-Term Solution to Tackle Brawls in Manggarai
Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung said he is beginning to prepare long-term handling following a brawl that broke out again in the Manggarai Station area, paralysing KRL travel.
Pramono said he is coordinating directly with the police and law enforcement officials to resolve this recurring social problem.
He revealed that the disturbance in Manggarai on Friday (21/8) was actually triggered by a trivial matter between groups of young people, but the friction had a wide impact, causing a build-up of KRL passengers at Cawang Station.
“As it happened yesterday in Manggarai, two groups whose problem was actually small, because of offence and so on, the young people got into a brawl,” Pramono said when met in the Menteng area, Central Jakarta, Saturday (22/8).
Seeing the pattern of conflict that keeps repeating, as reported by detikcom on Saturday (22/8), Pramono stressed that the Jakarta Provincial Government no longer wants to use a casuistic approach that is temporary in nature.
According to him, the root of the brawl problem needs to be resolved by providing positive spaces for young people to channel their energy.
One concrete solution being prepared by the Jakarta Provincial Government is to build various sports facilities and public spaces in densely populated areas, including Manggarai.
He mentioned that some of the facilities being considered are a boxing gym, badminton courts, mini soccer pitches, and futsal courts, which will be provided so that young people have a healthy outlet for activity.
“In solving the brawl problem, I prefer to solve it not in a way that is casuistic and only momentary,” Pramono said.
Pramono observed that the massive development projects and improved connectivity in Manggarai have not yet been matched by the availability of adequate activity spaces.
The condition of residents who are tired after their activities, coupled with the lack of sports facilities and arts and cultural activities, makes residents prone to emotional flare-ups.
Through the provision of sports, arts, and cultural facilities, the aggressive energy of young people is expected to be diverted in a positive direction.
The Jakarta Provincial Government hopes that the presence of these public facilities will become a long-term bulwark to erode the tradition of brawling and build mutual respect among residents in the Manggarai area.
