Pramono Signs Utility Network Bylaw to Tackle Jakarta's Dangling Cable Chaos

Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung has confirmed that the arrangement of the capital’s chaotic utility cables will be accelerated after the Regional Regulation (Perda) on Integrated Utility Network Facilities (SJUT) was officially signed and enacted. He stated that this regulation provides the legal foundation needed to gradually move utility cables into underground networks. “The Perda on SJUT has been signed by me. Previously, these cables could not be placed underground because there was no legal basis for it,” Pramono said at City Hall on Friday (26/6). He explained that Jakarta will partner with several companies and private entities to speed up the arrangement of the utility networks. “Moreover, there are now several private companies or entities that will cooperate with the Jakarta Provincial Government to handle these cables. As we can see now, we are starting to put the cables underground,” he said. The PDIP politician noted that one of the biggest problems facing Jakarta is the large number of overhead cables that are no longer in use but remain hanging because their owners are unaware of their existence. “Jakarta, which is so complex and so large, has a main problem with many cables that are actually no longer utilised, but the owners do not know because they have been there for so long,” he said. With the enactment of the SJUT Perda, Pramono hopes the utility arrangement process can proceed in a more orderly and safe manner while improving the city’s aesthetics. “With the Perda that I have signed and which has been enacted, hopefully the handling of cables can be managed better,” he concluded.
