Pramono Seeks to Imbue Jakarta with Betawi Soul and Spirit at Majelis Kaum Betawi Iftar

Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung attended an iftar gathering of Majelis Kaum Betawi at Tangkuban Parahu Mosque in Setiabudi, South Jakarta. During the event, Pramono expressed his desire for Jakarta to possess the soul and spirit of Betawi culture.

“Colleagues, as Jakarta’s Governor, I very much want Jakarta’s soul and spirit to be Betawi. If its soul and spirit are Betawi, I am confident that the role of the Betawi community will be directly felt by the people,” Pramono said in his remarks before attendees on Monday, 2 March 2026.

Pramono recounted how cultural activities, including ceremonial activities at City Hall, frequently incorporate Betawi touches, which he described as his commitment to realising a Jakarta with Betawi spirit.

“There is no longer anyone wearing the jas ujung serong, Betawi kebaya, Encim kebaya, and so forth,” he explained.

Pramono explained that to achieve this goal, he continuously applies Betawi touches wherever possible. For him, the matter of Betawi culture cannot be merely symbolic.

“Why do I do this? For me personally, the matter of Betawi culture is not merely text or script, but how the reality on the ground can be implemented,” he said.
