Governor of DKI Jakarta, Pramono Anung Wibowo, stated that the plan to build a tram in the Kota Tua area, West Jakarta, is still in the study phase. “For the Kota Tua tram, what was conveyed by Mr Deputy Governor certainly needs to be studied more deeply,” said Pramono in East Jakarta on Tuesday (14/4/2026). The proposal to revive the tram traversing Kota Tua emerged after it was raised by Deputy Governor Rano Karno. Public transport in Jakarta, a legacy of the Dutch colonial government, was abolished in 1962. Pramono explained that the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government is still prioritising the completion of the MRT Lebak Bulus-Kota project, targeted for completion in early 2029. He is optimistic that the presence of integrated transport will revive the historic area. “Because once that is done, the KRL will run, the MRT will run, Transjabodetabek or TransJakarta will run to Kota Tua, I am sure Kota Tua will become a new place that will be visited by the community,” said Pramono. In addition to the MRT, continued Pramono, the Provincial Government also plans to develop Transjakarta bus routes connecting Kota Tua with areas outside Jakarta. He assessed that transport integration is key to increasing the attractiveness of the area.
