Pramono Says Tendean Footbridge Struck Due to Negligent Lorry Driver Exceeding Capacity
Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung stated that the damage to the pedestrian footbridge (JPO) on Jalan Kapten Tendean, South Jakarta, was caused by the negligence of a lorry driver transporting heavy equipment that exceeded the permitted capacity. The incident resulted in traffic congestion in the Tendean area. “Regarding the damage to the Tendean footbridge, it is absolutely certain that this was due to the negligence of the driver who was carrying heavy equipment exceeding the height limit, causing extraordinary congestion,” Pramono said in Ancol, North Jakarta, on Tuesday (14/7/2026). Pramono said the Jakarta Provincial Government immediately moved to handle the impact of the incident. He has instructed the Jakarta Transportation Agency and related regional apparatus organisations to expedite traffic management around the location. “For that reason, I have asked the Transportation Agency and related OPDs to help open up smooth traffic flow at the Tendean footbridge,” he said. One supporting pillar of the footbridge was seen detached from the ground after being struck by the lorry carrying a crane. The bridge stairs on the side of Jalan Tendean heading towards Blok M also appeared separated from the connecting bridge. The lorry that hit the bridge remained at the scene as it was stuck under the bridge. As a result of the incident, traffic from the Pancoran flyover towards Blok M was gridlocked, with vehicle flow only becoming smooth after passing the footbridge. The lorry driver, identified as Andre (28), admitted he was focused on looking at a Maps application when he struck the footbridge. “We were about two kilometres away from arriving. I was focused on looking at Maps,” Andre said when met at the scene. Andre admitted it was his first time passing the Tendean footbridge. He said he was not yet familiar with the conditions of Jalan Tendean. “This is the first time passing here, I didn’t know before,” he said. Andre said he was driving the lorry from Bogor heading towards the Attorney General’s Office. “I was taking it to the Attorney General’s Office. From Summarecon Bogor,” he said.
