Pramono Says Number of Garbage Trucks to Bantargebang Landfill Has Decreased
Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung has stated that the number of garbage trucks transporting waste to the Bantargebang Integrated Waste Disposal Site (TPST) in Bekasi City, West Java, has begun to decrease. He said this has occurred following the increasingly massive implementation of the waste sorting movement within Jakarta’s communities. “Previously, every day the number of trucks entering Bantargebang was around 1,200. Now it has decreased, and at one point recently it was around 900,” Pramono explained in South Jakarta on Tuesday (21/7), as quoted by Antara.
He emphasised that the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government will therefore continue the waste sorting movement. It is hoped that all Jakarta residents will also sort their waste properly, so that the capital’s waste problem can be resolved. “So, there has been a quite significant decrease. We will continue with the waste sorting programme. As Governor of Jakarta, I truly hope that this waste sorting programme is carried out as well as possible,” Pramono explained.
In addition to continuing the waste sorting movement, the Jakarta Government will also revitalise the Reduce, Reuse, Recycle Waste Processing Sites (TPS3R). He hopes that processing waste at TPS3R facilities can reduce the residue sent to the Bantargebang TPST. The Jakarta Government will also invest in several pieces of equipment and cooperate with the private sector to revive the TPS3R sites in the capital. “We are investing in several pieces of equipment and also cooperating with the private sector, so that before waste reaches Bantargebang, it is processed at the TPS3R. Hopefully, with this, the residue that must still be sent to Bantargebang will be greatly reduced,” Pramono clarified.
The DKI Jakarta Provincial Government is currently preparing to reactivate the existing TPS3R sites. Pramono stated that a meeting was held regarding Bantargebang and preparations are underway. He also plans to directly inspect four to five TPS3R locations.
Previously, the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government began phasing out the open dumping practice at the Bantargebang TPST in Bekasi City, West Java. The initial stage was carried out by closing two active waste disposal zones as part of the implementation of a controlled landfill system. Head of the DKI Jakarta Environmental Agency, Dudi Gardesi, said the controlled landfill system began operating on Friday (17/7). The Integrated Waste Management Unit team first installed covering media on the upper area of Zone 2 at Bantargebang TPST. “The installation of covering media is a concrete step to reduce odour, help control gas emissions, and minimise the formation of leachate due to rainwater entering the waste pile area,” Dudi said.
