Pramono Says Heavy Rainfall in South Tangerang Causes Flooding in Jakarta

Jakarta — Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung Wibowo has said that heavy rainfall in the South Tangerang area has caused flooding in several parts of the capital.

“What is currently happening in Jakarta is due to high rainfall exceeding 200 millimetres, particularly in the South Tangerang area, where water has begun flowing into Jakarta. That is what has caused flooding in several locations,” Pramono said in South Jakarta on Friday.

He added that he has been in continuous communication with the Head of the Water Resources Agency, Ika Agustin, to monitor conditions and prepare for potential flooding in Jakarta, including the deployment of pumps as a preventive measure.

“Hopefully it won’t last long, as fortunately there is no tidal flooding at present, so the water should be able to recede quickly,” Pramono said.

Previously, Pramono also stated that the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government would continue to carry out weather modification operations (OMC) if rainfall exceeds 200 millimetres.

“What is clear is that the DKI Jakarta government is anticipating all possibilities. We receive data from BMKG [the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency] every day. We no longer need to announce that action needs to be taken,” Pramono said.

Pramono noted that weather conditions in the capital and surrounding areas are being continuously monitored. If rainfall does not exceed 200 millimetres, weather modification operations will not be conducted.

The DKI Jakarta Provincial Government is also contributing to weather modification operations in buffer zones such as Depok, Tangerang and surrounding areas.

In addition, the Jakarta Government will cooperate with the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) to carry out weather modification in other areas.
