Pramono reveals why weather modification cannot yet be carried out in Jakarta
Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung has revealed that weather modification operations (OMC) during the current dry season cannot yet be carried out because there are no clouds.
“Because as of today, there are no clouds. I have repeatedly ordered the Regional Disaster Management Agency to immediately carry out weather modification,” Pramono said at City Hall, Jakarta, on Wednesday.
According to him, weather engineering can only be carried out when clouds are present.
“As long as there are clouds, we will certainly carry out the OMC immediately,” Pramono said.
Previously, he stated that OMC could be carried out during the dry season.
Meanwhile, the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) explained that OMC is an intervention to increase the potential for rain by seeding salt or sodium chloride (NaCl) into cloud clusters using special aircraft.
One of the main requirements for salt seeding is the formation of convective clouds.
Currently, BMKG has recorded that the 2026 El Niño phenomenon is active and has the potential to reach a very strong level.
This condition is predicted to trigger a drier and longer dry season across most of Indonesia, increasing the risk of drought and various impacts on strategic sectors.
For this reason, strengthened mitigation measures and national preparedness are needed.
