Pramono Reveals Weather Modification to Curb Pollution Hampered by Lack of Clouds

Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung has said that dry weather is adding to air pollution in Jakarta. Pramono said there has been no rain in Jakarta for three weeks.

“Indeed, the current weather conditions and also the air pollution are quite, what shall I say, occurring, because we have had almost three weeks without any rain,” Pramono told reporters in Sudirman, Jakarta, on Sunday (16/8/2026).

He said the Jakarta Provincial Government has attempted to carry out weather modification. However, he said, the weather modification has been hampered by the absence of clouds.

“The DKI Jakarta Government has actually repeatedly tried to carry out weather modification, but we apologise because there are no clouds, so the rain cannot yet be produced,” he explained.

Pramono said he has asked the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) to work together with the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) on weather modification. He said weather modification will be carried out as soon as clouds are present.

“But I have instructed the Regional Disaster Management Agency to work together with BMKG, so that if clouds are present, weather modification can be carried out immediately,” he said.

Pramono said El Niño is also predicted to occur over a long period. Pramono asked residents to use public transport in order to reduce pollution.

“This El Niño, or dry spell, will also be long, and is estimated to last until the end of September. We all must take care, and I ask the public to use public transport as much as possible,” he said.

“Because now the public transport facilities in Jakarta are already quite good, and we have even made 15 categories free of charge, so we hope that will also reduce the existing pollution. Because almost all public transport, especially TransJakarta, will gradually be converted to electric vehicles by 2029,” he continued.
