Pramono Reveals Reasons for Evaluating Odd-Even Traffic System
The Jakarta Provincial Government (Pemprov DKI Jakarta) is currently evaluating the odd-even vehicle plate restriction system, which has been implemented on several Jakarta roads for 10 years. The implementation of this system, intended to alleviate congestion, is believed to have impacted economic activities.
Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung stated that several road segments within the odd-even zones are experiencing economic consequences. Affected areas include Jalan Gajah Mada and Jalan Hayam Wuruk, which are also impacted by the ongoing MRT Jakarta construction.
“Therefore, the regional government, the Jakarta Government, together with the Jakarta Provincial DPRD, are currently studying this matter,” he said at the Jakarta City Hall on Thursday (1/10/2026).
Meanwhile, the Chairman of the PKS Faction of the Jakarta Provincial DPRD, M Taufik Zoelkifli, expressed support for the plan to evaluate the odd-even system. He noted that the policy, which has been in place for the last 10 years, has never undergone a formal evaluation.
He acknowledged that while the odd-even system has provided positive results, particularly in managing traffic congestion, there are negative side effects.
“There are reports from the community, particularly from shopping malls or economic centres located along the odd-even routes, experiencing a decline in turnover, and some have even closed,” he said.
Consequently, the council member, often referred to as MTZ, proposed adjusting the patterns around affected malls so that these economic hubs are not negatively impacted by the system.
“Secondly, there is a loss; Jakarta’s economic sources are disappearing because they are moving out of Jakarta. I believe this odd-even system needs to be evaluated so that the economic aspects accompanying such decisions are given more consideration,” he added.
Currently, the Jakarta Provincial Government applies the odd-even system across 25 road segments, including Jalan Pintu Besar Selatan, Jalan Gajah Mada, Jalan Hayam Wuruk, Jalan MH Thamrin, Jalan Jenderal Sudirman, and Jalan Gatot Subroto, among others.
