The Jakarta Provincial Government is proposing to revitalise the Old Town area to make it more appealing to tourists, both domestic and international. Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung stated that the Old Town will be developed as a transit-oriented development (TOD) connected to various modes of public transportation. One of these is the extension of MRT Phase 2 to Old Town, with construction targeted for completion in 2029. “Once the MRT reaches Old Town in 2029, it will certainly look very different. Therefore, we are already preparing the TOD for Old Town from now, including transportation facilities,” he said at Jakarta City Hall on Thursday (9/4/2026). Besides the MRT, Pramono revealed that PT KAI will activate a new KRL route to the Old Town area. He mentioned having discussed the plan with PT KAI. In fact, the plan to activate the new KRL route is a directive from President Prabowo Subianto. “Hopefully, it can be completed this year,” he said. He explained that the new route does not involve building a new track but rather utilising an old track that has not been used for KRL. The track from the Tanjung Priok area to Rawajati is said to pass through Old Town and the Jakarta International Stadium (JIS). “It’s more or less the old track, but electrified, which was previously never utilised passing through Old Town, then to Tanjung Priok and so on, passing through JIS and so on,” he said.
