Pramono Reveals Jakarta Pollution Worsening, No Rain for Three Weeks

Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung has revealed that air pollution in the capital is becoming an increasing concern. One of the causes is that Jakarta has had almost no rain for three weeks.

Pramono said the dry conditions mean the government’s efforts to tackle air pollution through weather modification have not yet produced results, because the clouds needed to form rain are not available.

The statement was made by Pramono when met at the Car Free Day area in South Jakarta on Sunday, 16 August 2026.

Pramono explained that the high level of air pollution in Jakarta cannot be separated from the dry weather conditions of recent weeks.

“Because we have had almost three weeks without any rain,” Pramono said.

The situation is drawing attention because it coincides with the lead-up to the 81st anniversary of the Republic of Indonesia. The public hopes that various activities, including fighter jet displays, can be watched under clear skies.

However, Jakarta’s air quality remains a problem due to the lack of rain in recent weeks.

The Jakarta provincial government has previously tried repeatedly to carry out weather modification as one of the efforts to address the situation.

But according to Pramono, those efforts have not yet been able to produce rain. The obstacle is the absence of clouds that can be modified.

“The Jakarta government has actually tried repeatedly to carry out weather modification, but we apologise because there are no clouds, so the rain cannot yet be produced,” he said.

Under these conditions, weather modification cannot yet be carried out optimally. The government is still waiting for clouds to appear that would allow weather modification technology to be applied.

Although previous efforts have not produced results, Pramono assured that the regional government is not stopping its measures to address Jakarta’s air conditions.

He has instructed the Regional Disaster Management Agency to work together with the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency to carry out weather modification.

Weather modification will be carried out again when atmospheric conditions allow and clouds are available.
