Pramono Requests Satpol PP to Regulate Ondel-ondel Busking
Governor of DKI Jakarta, Pramono Anung, has emphasised that ondel-ondel is prohibited from being used for busking. He has requested that Satpol PP regulate any instances of such practices found on the streets.
According to Pramono, ondel-ondel is a Betawi cultural heritage that must have its dignity and honour preserved. Therefore, he deems it inappropriate to use it for busking on the streets.
“For ondel-ondel, we have made a decision to ban ondel-ondel on the streets because ondel-ondel is a trademark or icon of Betawi, an icon of Jakarta,” said Pramono at Lapangan Banteng, quoted from DetikNews on Saturday (11/4).
Pramono stressed that this does not mean an outright ban on the activity. According to him, socialisation will first be conducted with the ondel-ondel buskers in Jakarta.
“We will provide education, and I request Satpol PP to prohibit it in such places,” he explained.
The DKI Provincial Government will also not yet impose strict sanctions. This is because the current focus is on building public awareness to respect the values of Betawi culture.
“Sanctions not yet, but clearly it will be prohibited,” he added.
In the future, Pramono plans to provide a greater contribution for ondel-ondel in all Jakarta celebrations, especially on the birthday anniversary.
“Later, for Jakarta’s 500th anniversary, we will make ondel-ondel more festive,” he concluded.
