Pramono Prepares People's Schools for a Thousand Additional Students
Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung has stated that he will prepare locations for ‘People’s Schools’ to accommodate one thousand additional students. Specifically, President Prabowo has requested the Jakarta Provincial Government to increase the capacity of these pilot schools within the Jakarta metropolitan area.
“We will conduct in-depth studies and prepare locations that can be used as boarding facilities for the People’s School for one thousand students,” said Pramono during a visit to the Jakarta Selatan 10 People’s Senior High School on Friday, 3 July 2026.
During his visit, Pramono noted the remarkable achievements of children from underprivileged backgrounds. “Their spirit aligns with the fundamental goals of the Jakarta Provincial Government, which is why the President hopes we can expand capacity by up to one thousand students,” he remarked.
He also mentioned that this programme shares the same objectives as existing Jakarta Provincial Government initiatives, such as the Jakarta Smart Card (KJP), the Jakarta Superior Student Card (KJMU), and the amnesty for unredeemed diplomas. “In fact, before leaving the room, there was a mother requesting assistance for her child whose diploma had not yet been retrieved. We will follow up on this immediately,” Pramable continued.
The PDI-P politician expressed hope that this programme would serve as a gateway for disadvantaged children to look towards a better future, stating, “This programme is highly relevant and very appropriate to pursue.”
Social Affairs Minister Saifullah Yusuf noted that Jakarta currently only possesses one permanent building for the operation of the People’s School, utilising land owned by the Ministry of Social Affairs. “Therefore, the President wants an acceleration to ensure we do not fall behind,” he said, while participating in the inspection of the Jakarta Selatan 10 People’s Senior High School alongside Pramono.
He acknowledged the current challenges regarding land shortages but revealed that ten potential locations for the pilot schools have been identified. “Of those ten locations, eight are currently undergoing renovation, including a building owned by the National Institute of Public Administration (LAN) in Pejompongan, Marunda, and Curug,” he explained.
These buildings have been declared suitable by the Ministry of Public Works. In this regard, Saifullah projected the addition of permanent People’s School buildings within the Jakarta area, stating, “For Jakarta specifically, one permanent building is not enough. If necessary, there should be five, so that we can accommodate more than 10,000 students in the People’s School system.”
