Pramono Orders Senayan City and Plaza Senayan to Be Connected by Tunnel

Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung Wibowo has requested that the management of Senayan City and Plaza Senayan construct an underground connecting tunnel. The tunnel is considered a solution to reduce traffic congestion caused by people crossing the road.

This was not merely a request. He has made it obligatory for the two mall operators to realise the construction of the tunnel beneath Jalan Asia Afrika.

“So for Senayan City and Plaza Senayan, I am also making it obligatory for them to be connected underground,” Pramono said in Jakarta on Wednesday (1/7/2026).

According to him, discussions about the tunnel construction have been ongoing for a long time. However, the project has been hampered by the conflicting interests of the respective mall operators.

Therefore, Pramono will employ another tactic to ensure the operators of Senayan City and Plaza Senayan realise the tunnel construction. The tactic to be used is threatening to raise taxes for the two mall operators.

“Their egos have never met from the start. I said, if you don’t want to be connected, then fine, we will raise your taxes because you are disrupting traffic. That is how we work. So we don’t need to bother, just raise the taxes, and they will certainly be willing to negotiate because it is mutually beneficial for both of them,” Pramono said.

He explained that the tunnel construction would not only benefit the wider community. More than that, the two mall operators would certainly gain significant advantages.

“It benefits Plaza Senayan, it benefits Senayan City. But because their egos have never met, that is what we are currently working on,” Pramono stated.
