Pramono on Seawater Desalination: Giant Sea Wall Must Commence Immediately

Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung has responded to a proposal from the Jakarta Regional House of Representatives (DPRD) regarding the option of processing seawater into clean water to meet public demand. He stated that converting seawater into usable water is directly related to the construction of the Giant Sea Wall.

“To transform seawater into fresh water that can be used, one of the essential steps is for the Giant Sea Wall to commence immediately,” Pramono said in the Kramat Raya area, Central Jakarta, on Thursday (17/09/2026).

According to Pramono, if the construction of the Giant Sea Wall can proceed promptly, both brackish and fresh water supplies can be processed into water that is usable by the community. He added, “For Jakarta, if this can be achieved, then the supply of brackish or fresh water can be processed into water for public use. Through PAM Jaya, the Jakarta Provincial Government is ready to undertake that.”

Previously, the Chairman of the Jakarta DPRD, Suhud Alynudin, proposed that the Jakarta Provincial Government begin considering desalination technology to anticipate potential clean water shortages. He noted that such a measure is worth considering.

“One step that could be taken is to implement desalination; it is already being used in the Thousand Islands to convert seawater into clean, fresh water,” Suhud said at the Jakarta DPRD building on Thursday (17/09/2026).

He mentioned that desalination technology has already been applied in the Thousand Islands and suggested that this experience could serve as a viable option to be developed in facing the threat of clean water shortages in Jakarta.
