Pramono on Cycle Lanes: I Must Be Careful in Making a Decision

Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung has said he is being careful in deciding the fate of cycle lanes in Jakarta. This follows a proposal to close the lanes because they are considered to be used more by motorcyclists.

Pramono said there are currently two views regarding the existence of cycle lanes. The cycling community, including Bike to Work, is asking for the lanes to be retained. Meanwhile, some members of the public believe the cycle lanes are in fact used mostly by motorcyclists.

“I will decide on this matter soon. There is indeed a proposal. If the proposal comes from the cycling community, one of them being Bike to Work, they are actually asking for it to be retained. But the proposal from the public, from the community, feels that the lane is used more, as you said, by motorbikes,” Pramono said in South Jakarta on Thursday (20/8/2026).

Pramono admitted he needs to be careful in making the decision. He noted that he is also a cyclist, so he does not want the decision on cycle lanes to be linked to his hobby.

“My friends certainly know that I am very much a cyclist. Every week I definitely cycle, so in this decision I also have to be careful,” he said.

Pramono explained that he usually rides a road bike on holidays or on Saturday mornings. Outside those times, he admitted he no longer cycles.

“Why be careful? So that it does not appear that because I enjoy cycling, I do not want to use the lane. The way I cycle uses a road bike, and that is usually on holidays or Saturday mornings,” he explained.

“Apart from that, I no longer cycle now. So I will decide on this matter later,” he added.

Previously, the existence of a number of cycle lanes in Jakarta came under scrutiny because their use was considered not yet optimal. One of the problems that emerged was that the cycle lanes were being used by motorcyclists.

Pramono said the Jakarta provincial government will consider various inputs before determining policy on cycle lanes. The decision is expected to take into account the needs of cyclists as well as the conditions of road use in Jakarta.

“So I will decide on this matter later,” he concluded.
