A massive waste heap at the Bantargebang Integrated Waste Disposal Site (TPST) in Bekasi City, West Java, collapsed and caused four deaths. Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung expressed his condolences following the incident.

Pramono said the landslide occurred in zone 4A of TPST Bantargebang. He suspected that heavy rain caused the accumulated waste to become unstable and slide, blocking the operational road and Ciketing River for approximately 40 metres.

“The landslide in zone 4A occurred at 14:30 and is believed to have been triggered by extreme rainfall on Sunday, which caused the operational road and Ciketing River spanning 40 metres to be covered by waste,” Pramono said at Jakarta City Hall on Monday (9 March 2026).

Pramono identified the four deceased as comprising two truck drivers, one female waste scavenger, and one street vendor in the vicinity. He conveyed his condolences regarding the incident.

“Four people died—two drivers and one person who was selling, a 60-year-old woman. Then one person was a waste scavenger, also a woman. So once again, the DKI Jakarta government is deeply saddened by this,” he said.

He stated that the street vendor was not located directly in the waste pile area. However, the landslide caused waste to slide onto the adjacent road, affecting the victim.

“Not directly at the waste site, but at some distance. However, because of the landslide or sliding, she was ultimately struck,” he explained.

The provincial government conducted emergency response operations to handle the incident. Response efforts involved coordinated teams from Basarnas, the Indonesian Military, National Police, Jakarta and Bekasi disaster management agencies, and fire services. A total of 19 excavators and seven ambulances were deployed for victim evacuation and on-site management.

Pramono stated that the deceased who was a non-permanent employee of the Environmental Services Agency would receive compensation from the Employment Social Security Agency (BPJS Ketenagakerjaan). Meanwhile, medical treatment for five injured victims would be covered by the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government.

“Five people were injured, and all have returned to their respective homes. All treatment costs are fully covered by the DKI Jakarta Government,” he said.

Operations in zone 4A of TPST Bantargebang are now temporarily suspended. Waste shipments from Jakarta are temporarily minimised and redirected to other zones.

“For now, zone 4A is closed. Waste shipments are minimised, operations are being relocated to zone 3, and two new zones are being prepared as temporary alternatives,” he said.
