Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung revealed himself to be an NBA fan during a meeting with New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani. The two met as part of the Urban 20 (U20) Mayors Summit 2026.

Pramono shared the moment in a video on his official Instagram account, noting that the conversation served as a warm-up before tackling more serious topics. “I am a New York Knicks fan,” he said while shaking hands with Mamdani, as reported on Sunday (20/09/2026).

Pramono added that he was delighted when the club won the 2026 NBA championship. He also mentioned being a fan of several specific players. “My favourite players are Jalen Brunson, Josh Hart, and Michael Bridges. But I have been a New York Knicks fan since the era of Patrick Ewing and Carmelo Anthony!” he explained.

Mamdani warmly received the remark, expressing his pleasure in meeting Pramono at the event. “Wow, we are very happy to meet you,” he said.

The Urban 20 Mayors Summit 2026 is being held from 19–21 September in New York, USA. Mamdani personally invited Pramono to attend the event.

The summit serves as a G20 engagement group and acts as a platform for leaders of the world’s major cities to present perspectives and policy recommendations at the municipal level.

Pramono and Zohran were also scheduled to hold a bilateral meeting on Sunday. The two leaders intend to discuss opportunities for cooperation between Jakarta and New York, the two cities they lead.

Several sectors will be discussed, specifically public transport and clean air, water management and coastal resilience, waste management, and food price dependency.

“Mayor Mamdani’s invitation clearly places housing, climate, mobility, and economic opportunity as shared tasks for major cities. Jakarta comes to New York to contribute, learn, and bring home cooperation that can be realised as programmes for our citizens,” said the Governor’s Special Staff for Public Communication, Chico Hakim, in a statement.
