NEW YORK – Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung met with New York City Mayor Zohran Kwame Mamdani at Civic Hall, New York, on Sunday (20/09/2026). The bilateral meeting addressed several urban challenges, ranging from public transportation and flooding to air pollution and development financing through municipal bonds.

During the meeting, Mamdani explored Jakarta’s strategies for tackling congestion and developing public transport. Pramono explained the expansion of the Transjabodetabek service as an effort to strengthen Jakarta’s connectivity with its surrounding satellite cities while reducing private vehicle usage.

“Every day, more than four million people enter and exit Jakarta, especially during peak hours. Through Transjabodetabek, we aim to reduce congestion and the volume of vehicles entering Jakarta while strengthening regional connectivity. We also provide free public transport services for 15 groups of people, including the elderly, persons with disabilities, as well as students receiving KJP and university students receiving KJMU,” said Pramono.

Pramono also outlined Jakarta’s steps to manage flooding through the construction of flood control infrastructure, the reduction of groundwater extraction to curb land subsidence, and the development of the Giant Sea Wall.

“Like New York, one of Jakarta’s challenges is flooding. Therefore, we are continuously strengthening flood control infrastructure, reducing groundwater use to suppress land subsidence, and developing the Giant Sea Wall,” he explained.

The meeting also discussed the Jakarta Provincial Government’s plan to issue municipal bonds, or Jakarta Bonds, to finance urban infrastructure development. Mamdani welcomed the plan and offered a knowledge exchange between the finance teams of New York and Jakarta.

“I am very enthusiastic about and support Jakarta’s plan to issue municipal bonds. New York has also used bonds to finance infrastructure development, including waste management and various public facilities. We are ready to send a finance team to share experience with the Jakarta Provincial Government regarding the preparation and process of issuing municipal bonds,” said Mamdani.

The bilateral meeting opened opportunities for further cooperation between Jakarta and New York in the areas of transport development, flood control, and urban infrastructure financing.
