Pramono: Jakarta Provincial Government to Strengthen Sport Tourism to Boost Capital's Economy
Jakarta - The Jakarta Provincial Government intends to strengthen sport tourism by organising various sporting events to stimulate economic activity in the capital, according to Governor Pramono Anung.
“We will continue to increase the frequency of sporting events because their benefits are very broad,” said Pramono during the inauguration of the 2026 Jakarta Governor’s Cup Tennis Tournament, organised by the Jakarta Provincial Management of the Indonesian Tennis Association (Pelti) at the Hotel Borobudur Tennis Court, Central Jakarta, on Saturday.
He noted that with continuously improving sports infrastructure and facilities, Jakarta is prepared to host various championships at both national and international levels. “We want Jakarta to be a city capable of producing achievements while simultaneously becoming a primary sport tourism destination in Indonesia,” he stated.
The Jakarta Provincial Government is also continuing to revitalise and improve various sports facilities and their supporting access. These efforts include enhancing public transport connectivity, including the expansion of the LRT network and the strengthening of KRL (commuter train) integration towards community activity centres and sports areas.
“Sporting activities have proven to encourage a healthy lifestyle, strengthen the national sports ecosystem, and drive the regional economy and tourism,” Pramermono added.
According to Pramono, the 2026 Jakarta Governor’s Cup Tennis Tournament, organised by Pelti DKI Jakarta, represents the provincial government’s commitment to supporting athlete development, improving the quality of national sports competitions, and strengthening sport tourism in the capital. He noted that the presence of athletes from various regions demonstrates that Jakarta is increasingly trusted as a host for national-scale sporting championships.
He expressed hope that this tournament would serve as a platform for athlete development by increasing competitive experience and scouting potential talent. “Sustainable competitions are a vital part of long-term development leading towards the 2028 National Sports Week (PON) in West Nusa Tenggara and East Nusa Tenggara (NTB–NTT), and even international-level championships,” said Pramono.
Meanwhile, the Chairman of Pelti DKI Jakarta, Hari Nugroho, explained that this championship is a national-level tournament under the Pelti Recognised Tennis (TDP) category, with total prizes amounting to IDR 250 million. The championship is also one of the largest national tennis tournaments this year in terms of participant numbers and regional coverage.
“This tournament aims to improve the quality and achievements of Indonesian tennis players, specifically in determining the PELTI National Rankings (PNP), while also serving as a warm-up for PON 2028,” he said.
Hari added that out of 322 total participants, 178 are national TDP athletes from 23 provinces, including tennis players ranked in the top 10 national rankings for both men and women, such as Tegar, Luki, and Mishka. In addition to the national athlete category, the tournament also features a category between twelve institutions, involving 144 Civil Servants (ASN) from various ministries and local governments.
