Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung has invited President Prabowo Subianto to inaugurate the Jakarta LRT Velodrome-Manggarai route on Wednesday, 26 August. Pramono acknowledged Prabowo’s busy schedule in handling several disasters across Indonesia and said he would defer to the President on the timing of the ceremony. “Regarding the inauguration, we propose 26 August. The timing will of course follow President Prabowo Subianto’s schedule, whether morning or afternoon or another day, because he is currently handling matters related to forest fires and the earthquake in NTT,” Pramono said at Manggarai LRT Station in South Jakarta on Monday, 24 August.

Pramono said construction of the Velodrome-Manggarai line is 100 per cent complete. He noted that the Ministry of Transportation has checked readiness ahead of the inauguration. “We have observed and received reports that, firstly, overall construction of this LRT, particularly the tracks and elevated line, is 100 per cent complete. Secondly, the construction is 100 per cent complete,” he said.

The Velodrome-Manggarai stretch spans 6.4 kilometres and forms part of the overall 12.2-kilometre Jakarta LRT Kelapa Gading-Manggarai line. The corridor is supported by investment of Rp12.1 trillion and serves 11 stops. Once the Kelapa Gading-Manggarai line is fully operational, passenger numbers are projected to reach around 60,000 per day in the initial phase, rising to around 80,000 per day under normal conditions. Services are planned to operate from 05.00 to 24.00 WIB, with each trainset having a capacity of 275 passengers.

Pramono also plans to push for expanded LRT connectivity to several other strategic areas, including from Kelapa Gading to Jakarta International Stadium (JIS) and from Velodrome to the Whoosh high-speed rail area in Halim. “If that is connected, then the LRT managed by the Jakarta Provincial Government will become the main backbone for managing transportation in East Jakarta, North Jakarta and South Jakarta, and ultimately ending in Central Jakarta,” he said.
