Pramono: Independence Must Be Filled with Real Work for Citizens
Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung has stressed that the meaning of independence must be realised through real work so that the fruits of development can be felt evenly by all levels of society. He made the remarks while acting as inspector of the 81st Independence Day ceremony at Jakarta City Hall on Monday (17/8).
According to Pramono, Jakarta’s progress must go hand in hand with equitable distribution. Jakarta’s economic growth in the second quarter of 2026 reached 5.52%, contributing 16.32% to the national gross domestic product (GDP), while inflation was recorded at 2.5%.
“This achievement serves as an impetus to ensure that development progress can be felt evenly by the public,” said Pramono.
He said development is directed towards strengthening economic growth, creating jobs, reducing inequality, and ensuring no citizen is left behind. Jakarta also recorded the highest Human Development Index (HDI) nationally at 85.05 in 2025.
To strengthen human development, the Jakarta Provincial Government is continuing a number of programmes, including the Jakarta Smart Card (KJP) Plus, the Jakarta Outstanding Student Card (KJMU), diploma legalisation, labour-intensive schemes, and support for People’s Schools.
“Opportunities to obtain education and improve quality of life must be opened as widely as possible in order to break the chain of disadvantage,” he said.
In the transport and infrastructure sector, the Jakarta Provincial Government is pushing for the completion of the Kelapa Gading–Manggarai LRT, MRT Phase 2 from Bundaran HI to Kota Tua, the Dukuh Atas Pedestrian Deck, the construction of a hospital on the former Sumber Waras Hospital site, and transport integration towards the Thousand Islands.
Starting in 2027, sea transport management to the Thousand Islands will also be handled by Transjakarta. The Jakarta Provincial Government is simultaneously strengthening transport integration in the JIS–Ancol area and carrying out urban improvements, including the removal of monorail pillars on Jalan H.R. Rasuna Said.
In the environmental sector, Jakarta is strengthening waste sorting at source, optimising 3R waste processing sites, and preparedness for the dry season. The Jakarta Provincial Government has also maintained an Unqualified Opinion (WTP) from the Supreme Audit Agency (BPK) for nine consecutive years and is promoting financing innovation through regional bonds.
Pramono stressed that the spirit of independence is now realised through collaboration and public service. “Independence means providing the best service so that the public feels protected, safe, comfortable, and has a sense of ownership of their city through the spirit of Jaga Jakarta,” he asserted.
The spirit of solidarity was also demonstrated through the dispatch of health workers and humanitarian aid worth Rp3.8 billion for victims of natural disasters in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT). The aid came from voluntary donations by City Hall civil servants.
To enliven the 81st Independence Day, the Jakarta Provincial Government implemented a special Transjakarta fare of Rp8 and presented free entertainment at Monas, Bundaran HI, Kota Tua, and the Thousand Islands.
Jakarta Deputy Governor Rano Karno added that the series of Independence Day festivities in Jakarta was the result of collaboration between the Jakarta Provincial Government, regional-owned enterprises, and the central government.
“Around 60% of the people’s festivities from HI to Monas are fully supported as a form of Jakarta’s readiness to embrace the future as a world stage,” said Rano.
