Pramono: Independence Means Providing Services So Jakarta Residents Feel Safe and Protected

Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung has conveyed the meaning of independence on the 81st anniversary of the Republic of Indonesia. He said that for the Jakarta provincial government, independence is realised by providing the best possible services to the public.

Pramono made the remarks after attending the 81st Independence Day commemoration ceremony at Jakarta City Hall on Monday (17/8/2026).

“The meaning of independence is to provide the best possible services for the people of Jakarta so that they feel protected, feel safe, feel secure, feel comfortable, and feel that they own the city of Jakarta,” Pramono said.

He said this spirit will continue to be realised through the ‘Jaga Jakarta’ movement. Pramono expressed hope that Jakarta will remain in a safe and controlled condition.

“So the spirit of ‘Jaga Jakarta’ will continue, and hopefully Jakarta remains in a well-controlled condition. Safe,” he said.

Pramono also stressed that independence is not merely a legacy to be remembered and celebrated. According to him, independence is a mandate that must be fulfilled with concrete work.

“The independence I am referring to is not about battle, but about lowering one’s ego,” he said.

Pramono invited all parties to listen to one another and work together in building Jakarta.

“It is a mandate that demands concrete steps, not merely a string of rhetoric. Let us take on whatever role we can, however small, to jointly build Jakarta’s progress for the future of a sovereign, just, and prosperous Indonesia,” he said.

He said Jakarta’s current development is directed at ensuring that the city’s progress can be felt evenly. A number of challenges such as traffic congestion, flooding, housing needs, job creation, and improving the quality of public services remain shared tasks.

Pramono also highlighted Jakarta’s economic achievements. In the second quarter of 2026, Jakarta’s economy grew by 5.52%, contributing 16.32% to the national economy. Jakarta’s inflation was recorded at 2.5%.

“Jakarta’s economic growth is currently running relatively well, growing at 5.52%. Inflation is 2.5%. Its contribution to GDP is 16.3%, and this is what must be maintained and nurtured,” he explained.

In addition, Pramono said Jakarta’s Human Development Index (HDI) in 2025 reached 85.05, the highest nationally.

“And what is also encouraging is that our human development index is number one in all of Indonesia, at 85.05,” he added.
