The movement was launched as part of the 499th Anniversary Proclamation of Jakarta City, held in the Pedestrian area of Jalan HR Rasuna Said, in front of Plaza Festival, Jakarta, on Sunday (10/5). The event was also combined with the Clean Jakarta Guardian Campaign: Waste Sorting Movement.

Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung stated that the waste sorting movement is an important step in resolving Jakarta’s waste problems. He hopes that this movement can be carried out seriously and sustainably.

“Therefore, today in accordance with the Governor’s instructions, we will hold a movement to sort waste. I am confident that under the guidance and leadership of the Minister of Environment, hopefully the waste sorting issue together with the Coordinating Minister for Food will be carried out earnestly and seriously as a new movement for Jakarta to sort waste,” said Pramono in his speech at the ‘499th Anniversary Proclamation of DKI’ event on Sunday (10/5/2026).

“And my hope is that hopefully the waste problem in Jakarta, which from time to time has never been resolved, will be resolved,” he continued.

Effective Simultaneously Starting 10 May

This waste sorting movement aligns with Gubernatorial Instruction No. 5 of 2026. Under the regulation, residents are required to sort waste into at least four categories: organic waste, inorganic waste, hazardous and toxic materials or B3, and residue.

This instruction takes effect simultaneously starting 10 May 2026 throughout the administrative city areas of DKI Jakarta. Waste sorting at the source is expected to reduce the burden of waste management downstream, including at final disposal sites.

Based on observations by detikcom, residents also received education on the importance of sorting waste from home. Waste sorting is considered necessary to become a collective habit because waste problems cannot be solved only at final disposal sites.

One representative from the DKI Jakarta Environmental Agency explained that this movement not only aims to mobilise residents but also to build awareness that waste is a shared responsibility. Therefore, waste processing needs to start from upstream or at the source.

KLH Supports Jakarta’s Waste Sorting Movement

Minister of Environment Jumhur Hidayat supports the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government’s efforts to promote the waste sorting movement. According to him, this movement becomes an important milestone in maintaining cleanliness and the quality of life for Jakarta residents.

“This becomes a new historical milestone for Jakarta in maintaining cleanliness and the quality of life of its residents. Indeed, Jakarta must be at the forefront in setting an example. After being inaugurated by the President, we are now preparing a waste management roadmap so that this issue is resolved across Indonesia within two years,” said Jumhur.

Jumhur mentioned that Jakarta produces around 8,000 tonnes of waste per day. Meanwhile, nationally, the amount of waste generated reaches around 141,000 tonnes per day, with 75 percent of it not yet properly processed.

He said that the waste sorting movement needs to be supported with adequate facilities. According to him, when the community starts sorting waste, local governments must also ensure that management facilities are available on the ground.

“However, this is important for local governments throughout Indonesia. When the community is willing to sort waste, sometimes the facilities are not yet available at waste disposal sites. Therefore, regents, governors, district heads, and village heads must ensure that the waste sorting movement meets with policies for providing adequate facilities. With that, waste sorting can run perfectly,” Jumhur concluded.

Part of the Jakarta Anniversary Series

The proclamation of the waste sorting movement is part of the series of events for Jakarta’s 499th Anniversary towards five centuries. The event was attended by DKI Jakarta Provincial Government officials, central government, ambassadors, communities, business actors, and the general public.

Through this movement, the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government wants to encourage collaboration to realise Jakarta as a cleaner, more organised, and sustainable global city.
