Pramono Hesitant to Rush Decision on Proposal for Twice-Weekly Car Free Day
Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung Wibowo has admitted that he does not wish to rush a decision regarding the proposal to hold “Car Free Day” (CFD), or Motor Vehicle-Free Day, twice a week on Saturdays and Sundays.
“Car Free Day exists in almost all areas of Jakarta. However, the fundamental question always concerns the Sudirman-Thamrin and Rasuna Said areas. Because of this, I do not want to be too hasty in making a decision,” said Pramono when met after inspecting a project development in Pasar Minggu, South Jakarta, on Monday.
To that end, he requested that the proposal be studied thoroughly first. It is hoped that the CFD will not disrupt community activities during the weekend.
“We must ensure that the desire to promote healthy living for citizens does not inadvertently lead to unhealthy conditions due to the burden of closed roads and other related issues. Therefore, we will certainly decide at the appropriate time,” Pramono explained.
Previously, Pramono admitted that the proposal from the Minister of Environment, Jumhur Hidayat, regarding holding CFD twice a week in the capital, has been discussed internally.
Pramono assessed that the proposal to hold CFD on both Saturdays and Sundays is rational enough to be considered.
“I have read the proposal. In fact, the proposal is quite rational. Therefore, we have conducted discussions internally within City Hall,” said Pramante.
Nevertheless, Pramono stated that a decision has not yet been reached on whether CFD will be held twice a week. He noted that the Jakarta Provincial Government is still considering the proposal before making a final determination.
Pramono explained that CFD in Jakarta is currently held not only in the Sudirman-Thamrin area but also in the Rasuna Said area.
Currently, the routine CFD takes place every Sunday from 06:00 to 10:00 WIB in the Sudirman-Thamrin area and from 06:00 to 09:00 WIB in the Sudirman area.
Furthermore, Pramono mentioned that every administrative city in Jakarta now has designated spaces to host CFD events.
