Pramono: Handling brawls in Jakarta must be sustainable

Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung has stressed that handling street brawls in Jakarta must be carried out sustainably over the long term, including by providing public facilities to channel young people’s energy.

Pramono said the Jakarta Provincial Government does not want to deal with brawls on a case-by-case basis that only resolves problems in the short term.

“In resolving the problem of brawls, I would rather not solve it in a case-by-case manner that is only temporary, but the most important thing is how these young people’s energy can be channelled in a better way,” Pramono said in a written statement in Jakarta on Saturday.

According to Pramono, the provision of public spaces and facilities can serve as a means for young people to channel their energy while building positive interactions with their surroundings.

One of the efforts being made by the Jakarta Provincial Government, he said, is providing sports facilities, including boxing facilities in East Jakarta, which are expected to become a venue for positive activities for young people.

Pramono believes that the existence of public facilities that can be used together also opens up space for communication between communities, thereby fostering mutual respect and preventing potential conflicts.

In addition to long-term measures, the Jakarta Provincial Government has also coordinated with law enforcement agencies to anticipate potential conflicts between youth groups, including in the Bukit Duri area of Tebet, South Jakarta.

“I believe that resolving this is not solely a short-term matter. I want to resolve it more fundamentally and over the long term,” Pramono said.
