JAKARTA – Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung has stated his readiness to follow the central government’s directive to halt open dumping of waste at Bantargebang Waste Processing Facility (TPST) in Bekasi City, West Java.

Pramono stated that his administration has been implementing the instruction, particularly in Zone 4A of Jakarta’s largest waste processing site.

“For Zone 4, we have implemented what the Environment Minister instructed,” Pramono said at Jakarta City Hall on Tuesday, 10 March 2026.

Meanwhile, other zones at Bantargebang TPST will continue operating to accommodate waste from Jakarta.

“For zones 2 and 3 we will keep operating, but indeed following the Minister’s instruction in Zone 4A we are not open dumping there,” he said.

In addition to halting the practice, the Jakarta provincial government is also preparing plans to build a waste-to-energy power plant (PLTS) at the Bantargebang site. The project is estimated to require land of approximately 8 to 10 hectares.

“Bantargebang is one of the sites we will decide for a waste-to-energy power plant that will operate there, and for that we need approximately 8 to 10 hectares of land,” Pramono continued.

Previously, Environment Minister Hanif Faisol Nurofiq requested that the Jakarta provincial government cease the open dumping method at Bantargebang TPST.

“This incident should not have occurred if waste management was conducted in accordance with regulations. Bantargebang TPST should serve as a lesson for all of us to improve immediately, for the sake of human safety and environmental preservation,” Hanif stated in an official statement on Monday, 9 March 2026.

Hanif viewed the landslide that occurred on Sunday, 8 March 2026, resulting in four deaths, as a serious warning for all parties to improve waste management. According to Hanif, the incident demonstrated systemic failure in waste management and can no longer be tolerated.

For this reason, the central government is urging the Jakarta provincial government to immediately cease the practice and transition to a safer and more environmentally friendly waste management system.
