Pramono: Flooding is Inevitable in Jakarta During Heavy Rainfall
Hundreds of neighbourhood units (RT) in Jakarta were reported to be affected by flooding on Sunday, 8 March 2026. In addition, dozens of road sections in the capital were inundated with flood water over the weekend.
Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung said the flooding that struck his region over the weekend was caused by extreme rainfall. The rain continued throughout the day, resulting in flooding across the capital.
“Regarding flood management in Jakarta compared to other places, as you can see, the rainfall yesterday was extremely high,” he said at Jakarta City Hall on Monday, 9 March 2026.
However, he stated that Jakarta’s conditions have returned to normal following the previous day’s flooding. According to him, transportation services in Jakarta have also resumed as usual.
“Today, within less than a day, everything has returned to normal in terms of transportation,” Pramono said.
He assessed that flooding in Jakarta would be extremely difficult to eliminate entirely. Whenever there is rainfall with high intensity over an extended period, flooding is certain to occur in Jakarta.
“So as I have said, flooding is inevitable when there is heavy rainfall,” he said.
Nevertheless, the Jakarta Provincial Government does not simply accept this condition without taking preventive measures. The Jakarta Provincial Government is reported to be continuing its flood management efforts, including implementing mitigation measures before flooding occurs.
“The Jakarta Government has prepared itself to handle flooding, including areas such as DI Panjaitan, then Daan Mogot at the 13-kilometre mark, and several other locations that have been problematic for a long time. Actually, from yesterday onwards, these areas have been usable for transportation,” he said.
