Pramono emphasises that effective waste management must begin at home
Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung has emphasised that effective waste management must begin within individual homes and local neighbourhoods and be carried out continuously. Speaking during the Car Free Day (HBKB) event on Jalan HR Rasuna Said, South Jakarta, on Sunday, Pramono stated that waste sorting should become a daily habit for the public, rather than just a response to government regulations.
“What we want to achieve is to make waste sorting a daily behaviour for the community, not just because of Governor Instruction Number 5 of 2026, but as a collective movement,” Pramono said. To support this, the Jakarta Provincial Government provided 30 segregated bins, two inorganic waste trucks, waste weighing facilities, and cleaning personnel throughout the Rasuna Said event area.
He noted that behavioural change must stem from the awareness that every individual bears responsibility for waste issues. Addressing the younger generation, he remarked that while people often complain about dirty streets, air pollution, or waste problems, the solution lies in changing habits and recognising that they are part of the problem and must contribute to the solution.
He further noted that waste issues cannot be resolved simply by disposing of rubbish in bins; instead, the public must ensure waste is sorted correctly so it can be managed, utilised, and recycled optimally. The Car Free Day event is also seen as a way to encourage citizens to utilise public spaces positively, fostering interaction and improving the overall quality of life.
