Pramono Considers Proposal to Remove Cycle Lanes

Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung has acknowledged receiving public input calling for the removal of bicycle lanes on a number of roads.

Pramono stated that some members of the public feel the bicycle lanes on roads are actually more often used by motorcycles.

“But the proposal from the public is that they feel the lane is more often used, as you mentioned, by motorcycles,” Pramono said in South Jakarta on Thursday (20/8).

On the other hand, he said he had received input from the bike-to-work community asking for the bicycle lanes to be retained.

Pramono said the provincial government would soon decide on the fate of the bicycle lanes in Jakarta.

“I will soon make a decision on this matter,” he said.

Pramono said he would be careful in deciding the fate of the bicycle lanes. He does not want the decision on the bicycle lanes to be linked to the fact that he himself also often cycles but does not use those lanes.

“So in making this decision I also have to be careful. Why careful? So that it does not appear that because I enjoy cycling, I do not want to use the lane, because I do cycle using a road bike, and that is usually on holidays or Saturday mornings. Apart from that, I no longer cycle at all now. So I will decide on this matter later,” he said.
