Pramono Confirms General Sudirman Statue Will Not Be Relocated
Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung has ensured that the General Sudundirman Statue in the Dukuh Atas area will not be moved, even as the government prepares to construct a pedestrian deck as part of the Dukuh Atas Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) expansion.
Pramono stated that the decision was made after the government reviewed the detailed design of the project, which aims to connect various modes of transport within the area. He noted that the statue, which is one of the icons of Jalan Jenderal Sudirman, will remain an essential part of the new Dukuh Atas area design.
“The most important thing is that after reflecting for several days, the General Sudirman Statue will remain in this place. We will not move it to avoid controversy; instead, this place will become better and more beautiful,” said Pramono during the inauguration of the Dukuh Atas Pedestrian Deck construction in Central Jakarta on Sunday (21/6).
He explained that the statue’s position will eventually be situated almost in the centre of the pedestrian deck, making relocation unnecessary. Based on the reviewed design, the statue’s presence will actually become more visible from various sides of the area.
“The position will be almost in the middle, so there is no need to move it. I have seen the detailed drawings, and it does not need to be relocated; in fact, it will become a place remembered by everyone. This statue will be very visible when people walk around above,” he added.
The President Director of PT MRT Jakarta (Perseroda), Tuhiyat, also confirmed that the General Sudirman Statue will remain in its current location. He noted that the pedestrian deck design even includes a special viewing area so that visitors can view the statue from above.
“The Sudirman statue stays there. Within the pedestrian deck, we will have an observation deck where people passing above can directly view the Sudirman Statue from the deck’s viewing platform,” said Tuhiyat.
This confirmation serves as the latest development regarding plans previously disclosed by Pramono. Earlier, he had mentioned that the General Sudirman Statue could potentially be moved alongside the development of the Dukuh Atas TOD area.
At that time, Pramono stated that relocation was not intended to remove the statue, but rather to ensure its position was more prominent and visible to the public as a form of respect to Great General Sudirman.
“We must certainly show appreciation for the Sudirman statue because, after all, he is a great general. Therefore, when Dukuh Atas is developed and connected, the Sudirman Statue must be placed prominently,” Pramono said at Jakarta City Hall last October.
The relocation plan was also previously mentioned by the Minister of Transportation, Dudy Purwagandhi, while explaining the development of the Dukuh Atas transport integration area. Dudy had suggested the possibility of moving the statue closer to Jalan MH Thamrin as part of the area’s urban renewal.
However, after the project design was finalised, the Jakarta Provincial Government decided that the statue would remain in its current location and serve as a key component of the pedestrian deck concept.
The Dukuh Atas Pedestrian Deck is one of the primary projects in the development of the Dukuh Atas TOD area. The circular infrastructure, often nicknamed the ‘doughnut ring’, is targeted to begin construction today, Sunday (21/6), and is expected to be completed by 2028.
The project will strengthen public transport integration in central Jakarta by connecting at least six modes of transport: the KRL Commuter Line, MRT Jakarta, LRT Jakarta, LRT Jabodebek, Airport Rail Link, and TransJakarta.
