Pramono clarifies discourse regarding the increase in Jakarta DPRD seats
Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung Wibowo has provided an explanation regarding the discourse concerning an increase in the number of seats for the Jakarta DPRD, which is rumoured to reach between 180 and 220 seats.
Pramono stated that the Jakarta DPRD is not actually requesting an increase in seats. According to him, the DPRD’s request is to restore the number of seats to the levels that were in effect during the 2024 General Election.
“In reality, it is not a request for an addition, but due to the new law, the number of seats in Jakarta has experienced a decrease,” Pramono said in Central Jakarta on Tuesday.
He mentioned that the change in regulations has caused the potential reduction in the number of Jakarta DPRD seats. Therefore, the Jakarta DPRD is requesting that the number of seats be returned to the levels seen in the 2024 General Election.
“So, there is a request from our colleagues in the DPRD, and discussions have also been held with the Jakarta Government, to return to the previous number, as was the case in the 2024 election,” Pramoto revealed.
“Therefore, there is no specific request to add seats, but rather to restore the existing seats to the 2024 levels,” Pramono added.
Previously, the leadership of the Jakarta DPRD discussed the number of DPRD members during a meeting with the Legislative Body (Baleg) of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI) on Friday (2/10). During those discussions, figures ranging from 180 to 220 seats emerged, based on studies regarding the population representation ratio.
The Deputy Chairman of the Jakarta DPRD, Wibi Andrino, stated that the Jakarta DPRD is pushing for a revision of Law Number 2 of 2024 concerning the Special Region of Jakarta (DKJ), specifically regarding the regulation of the number of DPRD members.
“We are proposing a revision to the DKJ Law, particularly regarding the number of DPRD members, because Jakarta does not have regency or municipal-level DPRD,” said Wibi.
However, he emphasised that the figure of 180 to 220 members is still a proposal and subject to study, rather than a finalised number of seats. Currently, the Jakarta DPRD consists of 106 members. This number could potentially decrease to 85 seats in the 2029 General Election if no special provisions are made to regulate the number of Jakarta DPRD members.
