Pramono Claims Jakarta is ASEAN's Second-Best City for Public Transport

Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung has claimed the capital is now the city with the second-best public transport system in ASEAN after Singapore. Jakarta also reportedly ranks eighth in Asia and 17th globally for public transport, a development attributed to the provincial government’s ongoing efforts to integrate various transport modes. “For your information, Jakarta is now the number two city for public transport in ASEAN after Singapore. Number eight in Asia, and number 17 in the world,” Pramono said during the groundbreaking ceremony for the Dukuh Atas pedestrian deck in Central Jakarta on Sunday (21/6). He stated that the construction of the Dukuh Atas pedestrian deck is part of efforts to strengthen public transport integration in the capital. According to him, the facility will eventually connect six modes of transport in the Dukuh Atas area. Pramono explained that the area was previously planned to integrate only four modes, but based on further development, the number of connected modes has increased to six. “Earlier, the MRT Director (Tuhiyat) mentioned that four modes would be connected. In reality, it is not just four, but six modes that will be connected,” he said. He noted that the pedestrian deck will create a more integrated mobility system, or seamless mobility. With this concept, public transport users will be able to transfer between modes more easily without being exposed to heat or rain. “This pedestrian deck, with six connected modes, will become seamless mobility. This means people will no longer suffer from the heat or rain,” he stated. On the same occasion, Pramono also revealed several development plans for the Dukuh Atas area. One proposal is to turn the location into a site for immigration services and passenger check-in for Soekarno-Hatta Airport. He also raised the possibility that products from micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) marketed in the area could be developed with a concept similar to duty-free shopping. “I will ask the DKI Jakarta Regional Apparatus Organisation to make this place a location for immigration and check-in. With that, I am confident the airport train will thrive and be more easily integrated overall,” he said. Aside from highlighting public transport achievements, Pramono also mentioned that Jakarta had recently received encouraging news regarding its position in global city rankings. “Jakarta is now among the top 100 cities or capital cities in the world. Most importantly, Jakarta is better than Washington DC,” he concluded.
